So what is Synaptic Mapping?
SynapticMapping™ is a research based teaching tool based on 3 fundamental principles:
- Students learn better when they are actively engaged in processing new information in meaningful ways.
- Relating and connecting the learn-ability of information or skills to real life application is important for motivating the importance of learning.
- Students should focus on understanding big ideas rather than memorizing trivia.
Why this programme?
The programme is based on a system called SynapticMapping™ and essentially it is teaching students both organisational and academic skills using our process which is an extension of Mind Mapping and teaches students scholastic technique and how to use technologies (such as Microsoft Word) to enhance and improve academic performance and outcomes.
As an educator and parent of two boys I developed this approach because I see many children ,and more specifically boys struggling to succeed at school. This does not need to be – this is where my specific passion in education lies. Both my boys were diagnosed as problem learners at school. One of our boys was ‘diagnosed’ as having ADHD and another as being dyslexic –this creating a high level of stress and great anguish for us as parents. As a result I developed the SynapticMapping™ method to help my boys organise and complete academic work. The results, I do believe speak for themselves. Both our boys have successfully completed high school and have gone on to great success with tertiary studies – my eldest writing his first book at the age of 19 ,doing this whilst completing a business degree. My youngest has just completed his Commercial Helicopter Pilot exams and is completing his training. Our approach does use a software based approach but the process goes about teaching students a learning methodology as a life-long academic skill which is transferable across the range of curriculum subjects.
The programme teaches children organisational skills using SynapticMapping™ , a visual progressive and highly effective way of supporting students in working with and making sense of information.
